A rare opportunity...

A little bit about us...
Maple Jam is a semi-professional jazz a cappella septet based in Burlington, Vermont. We are a mixed ensemble (4 guys and 4 gals), established in 2004. We sing 5 to 7-part arrangements of jazz and big-band arrangements à la the Swingle Singers, Singers Unlimited, Manhattan Transfer and the Real Group, as well as our own. We rehearse weekly and gig throughout Vermont and, at times, in surrounding states and Southern Canada. Because we all have lives and other musical endeavors, we limit our gigs to about 12 performances per year. We’re an eclectic group of individuals: our current age range is from 30-somethings to 60-somethings. We like to have fun and joke around during our rehearsals together, but we are also serious, dedicated musicians who work hard toward our common goal, which is to achieve excellence in a cappella performance.
Our ideal candidates will have a flexible range from low to high within their voice part and should be able to blend their voice successfully with the rest of the group and sometimes be a featured soloist. Our 5 to 7-part jazz a cappella repertoire ranges from classic big band tunes, jazz standards from the American Songbook, and other fun music of the 1940s through the 1970s. Some ability to read music is a must. Good sight-reading skills are desirable, but not a deal-breaker. Since we are not accompanied by instruments, a good sense of pitch is essential. Comfort singing with a microphone in hand (and moving!) in front of audiences is also a big part of what being a member of this band is all about!
We are a semi-professional band: meaning that the group might get paid something to perform but it is not a viable career by any means. In other words - you keep your day job! However, we are serious about performing high-level concerts 8-12 times a year throughout the state of Vermont and just beyond its borders. All this requires a significant dedication of time and effort from each member. Our ongoing rehearsal schedule is one night a week for 3 hours (6-9pm). Each band member is expected to attend rehearsals regularly and is responsible for learning and memorizing their part between rehearsals.
